On 22nd March 2022, the Mentoring Cell of Symbiosis Center for Management Studies, NOIDA took the initiative to conduct a webinar to educate the students about the finance specialization under the title “Carve a Niche- Plan your Specialization (Domain-Finance)” as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power up: Boost for the Race of Life. The prime objective of this session was to guide the students in choosing the correct specialization for themselves and to enlighten them about the career opportunities available to them in the field of finance. The session was very interactive as the students were curious to know about the options available for them. The guest speaker of this session was Mr. D. Naveen Kumar, who is an Associate Director and Group Head at CARE Ratings Ltd. with an experience of over 12 years in credit risk analysis.

The session began with Mr. Naveen stating the 10 qualities, which can be cultivated by anyone. They were-

  1. Be on Time- Being punctual speaks a lot about personality.
  2. Work Ethics- The work ethics should be according to the organization wherever you work.
  3. Efforts- Right efforts in the right direction will yield good and apt results.
  4. Body Language- A lot is communicated through body language. Try to maintain a confident body language.
  5. Energy- Always try to be energetic. The energy shown during the execution of the projects, despite difficulties inspires and encourages the team. People love to be around energetic people.
  6. Attitude- Right attitude will help to reach altitude.
  7. Passion- Have interest in work. The work should be such that you forget the world while doing it. Everyone should focus on their own talents.
  8. Be approachable- Be ready to learn and listen from others. Leverage the strengths and overcome the weaknesses.
  9. Do something extra everyday- Always be willing to do some extra work.
  10. Be prepared- Both physically and mentally to face any type of difficulty or situation.

After stating these qualities, Mr. Naveen went on to introduce and elaborate 10 different streams or profiles under finance, which the students could opt for after completing their BBA course. First was Asset Management, which refers to the process of developing, operating, maintaining and selling assets in a cost-effective manner. Many companies offer jobs under this category. It involves market research which would help fund managers in decision-making and they also assess the credit worthiness of investments in Debt Market Securities. Equity or Debt dealers deal under the guidance of fund managers and NAV Fund Accountants calculate the Net Assets Value (NAV) of a fund. Second was Corporate Finance, which requires finding and managing the capital to run an enterprise. It mostly comprises financial analysts who come up with strategies and they also work on M&A. Quarterly and yearly budgets are prepared. Third was Investment or Corporate Banking, which requires a lot of patience, a good network, a calm demeanor and a lot of financial understanding according to Mr. Naveen. He stated that it is a risky but highly rewarding field.

Fourth was Credit Risk Management, where banks give loans to individuals and corporate bodies in a different manner because their creditworthiness is checked in different ways. Fifth was Hedge Fund Management. Hedge funds are unregulated private investment funds, whose managers can buy or sell a wide range of financial products. Sixth was Valuation or Financial Modeling, under which the value of the stake of a company is calculated. It requires an understanding of the economy, the chosen industry and the company to be valued. Seventh was Private Equity, which searches for entities requiring funds. All this is done after checking the creditworthiness and the due diligence of an entity. Eighth was Insurance, which has a lot of demand as companies also take insurance to handle the potential risks. Ninth was Stock or Bond Broker, where the portfolios of investors are managed by buying and selling stocks. Tenth was Banking, where corporate governance plays a vital role and the quality of loans determines the assets of a bank.

The floor was open for questions after the discussion. The queries were handled in such a manner that gave more insights on Finance which is a testament to the fact that our guest speaker is an expert who has extensive knowledge and experience in this emerging field. In the end, Dr. Kanishka Gupta, Faculty In-charge of Mentoring cell of SCMS, NOIDA concluded the session by expressing gratitude sincerely.

The Mentoring Cell of Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies, NOIDA, conducted a webinar, "CARVE A NICHE- Plan your specialisation" on 23rd March, 2022, in order to discuss career and growth opportunities in the dynamic field of marketing and how marketing can be a successful specialisation for students pursuing Bachelors of Business Administration. To give insights on this topic, Mr. Amit Agrawal was invited as the guest speaker of the event, who is a Strategy Leader with 17 years of experience in Corporate Strategy, Management Consulting, Marketing Analytics and Business Process Transformation and is currently working with Hewlett Packard Enterprise as Sr. Manager - Business Process Transformation.

This session was given an interactive start as the speaker proposed a question for all the attendees - “What do you think is marketing?”. He was flooded with responses such as, “Marketing is a skill which adds value to the promotion of a product and helps in persuading people to buy it.” After a healthy and a productive discussion, the speaker added, that marketing is an electrifying yet dynamic field. There are mainly two aspects of Marketing management - Analytical and Creative marketing. It is important for students to understand which field they would rather work in if they wish to choose marketing as a specialisation or a career option. As an analyst, a marketer’s job is to figure out the buying behaviour of customers and what makes them purchase the products they do. This field of study is pertinent in all possible products brought into the market such as automobiles, smartphones, fast moving consumer goods, etc. because using this data is crucial for all marketers as well as businesses to understand purchase behaviour and think from the perspective of a consumer. Creativity on the other hand is translating the insights gathered after analysing this data into effective marketing decisions.

Mr. Agrawal then explained the skills required to become successful in the field of marketing. Since a marketer is responsible for devising and implementing strategies to promote a brand or product, it is essential for an individual to be fast on their feet with regards to critical thinking, communication and implementation of their ideas. In addition to this, they must also be able to think from the point of view of a customer and analyse those inputs to shape their campaigns. At the end, the main objective of marketing is to maximise sales, hence it is essential for a marketer to work in sync with the sales team. This not only helps in developing pricing strategies, but also facilitates advertising campaigns and provides more awareness to the company regarding the consumers' opinions of the product/service. To conclude this session, the speaker said that it is important for a marketer to lead with both marketing and sales in mind to keep the buyer in mind throughout the entire process of developing and advertising a product. Following this, the event was brought to an end with a vote of thanks from Faculty in-charge, Dr. Kanishka Gupta and the members of the Mentoring Cell of SCMS, NOIDA.

On March 29, 2022, Mentoring Cell of SCMS NOIDA organized a session of Carve a Niche: Plan your Specialization (Domain- Human Resource). This session discussed opportunities in the dynamic field of Human Resources and how HR can be a successful career option for management students if they choose it as a major or minor specialization. To give insights into the field of Human Resources, Mr. Emmanuel Gosla was the honorable guest speaker of the session.

Mr. Emmanuel Gosla is Senior Resource Development Manager at EPAM systems. He has 17 years of experience as a trusted HR advisor and is an expert in coaching and advising business leaders, managers and employees. The event was smoothly conducted under the guidance of Dr. Kanishka Gupta, faculty-in charge and active participation of students.

The session started with students giving a brief introduction about themselves. Then sir proceeded with the session with a small activity. Sir circulated a Google form link that contained five questions. The objective of this exercise was to analyze how we interact with people. Mr. Gosla elaborated on the importance of human resource management in an organization. He explained that human resource is the most important asset in any organization and to manage it effectively one must have immense patience. For a person choosing HR as a career option, one must be patient enough to deal with people with varied personalities. Trust is also an important element for human resources people. Building trust with people is very essential for HR personnel. If there is no trust between the people, the organization cannot achieve its goals.

In the absence of trust people tend to leave the organization. He also shared his experiences in his 17 years of work experience in corporate. He discussed the difficulties faced during the recruitment process. Sir elucidated the roles, functions and goals of the HR department in the organization with help of an insightful presentation. Sir also engaged students in a brain teaser activity where few hints were given on the slides and students were asked to answer those in a word or phrase. Every phrase had significance for HR personnel. Sir shared an article from Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and discussed it with students. The article gave a lot of information about the soft skills required for an HR Manager. Some of these skills included communication, resiliency, cross-cultural awareness, networking, data analysis, ethical practice, interviewing, confidentiality and relationship management. Later, the session was open for students to ask their questions. A question was asked as the AI sector is developing day by day, so how will it impact the HR profession. Sir explained that AI will be immensely helpful to the HR professional. To manage an organization which consists of thousands of employees, AI will help analyze the trend and behavior among the employees.

The session was concluded by Dr. Kanishka Gupta, faculty In-charge of the Mentoring Cell, by giving the vote of thanks to the speaker and expressing how helpful and insightful was the session for students.

On 31st March 2022, the Mentoring Cell of Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies, NOIDA conducted a webinar on, “Personality Development” as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power-up: Boost for the Race of Life to educate the students that personality development helps one to live their life in a better way. The prime objective of this session is to help the students identify different personality types and recognize their personality traits, strengths and weaknesses.  The session was set to motion by a TEDx speaker, Anamika Yaduvanshi who has always followed the mantra of living each moment to the fullest with the zest of life. She has extensive experience and success in delivering results in personality and leadership development, counseling on teenager problems and depression & personal problem counseling. She is the founder president of Astitva Mujhse Meri Pehchan.

Ms. Anamika Yaduvanshi set in motion the webinar with a question: Why do we need to know personality type? It helps us to communicate better, it helps in resolving conflicts, it helps us choose the right people in our lives and it helps in strengthening the relationships were some of the key pointers discussed by Ms. Yaduvanshi in context with the question. Moving ahead with this enthralling session, different personality types were discussed which are- the Inspector, the Counselor, the Mastermind, the Giver, the Craftsman, the Provider, the Idealist, the Performer, the Champion, the Doer, the Supervisor, the Commander, the Thinker, the Nurturer, the Visionary and the Composer.

To strengthen the persona of any individual, our guest speaker talked about the strengths and the weaknesses of a personality. She quoted, “Being creative helps you become a better problem solver in all areas of your life and work. Instead of coming from a linear, logical approach, your creative side can approach a situation from all angles. Creativity helps you see things differently and deal better with uncertainty. Studies show that creative people are better able to live with uncertainty because they can adapt their thinking to allow for the flow of the unknown. Being creative comes with many ups and downs and a high risk of failure. You have to be vulnerable to share your art, and willing to take the risk that what you create may never see the light of the day. Engaging in the creative process is a great confidence builder, because you discover that failure is part of the process. Once we see failure as something that is survivable, and something that helps us grow and that it makes our work better, we can let go of the fear and try new things even at the risk of failing”.

It was a thrilling session as the students were enriched with the apt knowledge and skills to build a healthy personality with high levels of creativity. In the end, Ishaan Singh proposed a vote of thanks and expressed her thoughts and learnings from this webinar. Dr. Kanishka Gupta, Faculty In-charge of Mentoring cell of SCMS, NOIDA concluded the session by expressing gratitude sincerely.

On 1st April 2022, the Mentoring Cell of Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies, NOIDA conducted a webinar on Just Be You (Mental Health and Body Positivity) as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power-up: Boost for the Race of Life. This session aimed to help the students understand that mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood and a positive body image is important because it builds self-esteem and better mental and physical health.

Our guest speaker, Dr. Nupur Kohli is a healthcare leader, a speaker, an author and an advisor to the World Economic Forum Global Shapers. She got her MD (Doctor of Medicine) from the university of Amsterdam and she is a supervisory board member of UNICEF Netherlands. The session was set to motion by a question about what is wellbeing. According to WHO, mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make contribution in his or her community. She believes that it is always important to ask yourselves questions. For example, taking into consideration the seriousness of the global pandemic, COVID-19, what is health to you? She laid down the fact that women are twice as likely as men to get depression. Uncertainties and loneliness are the effect of COVID-19 on mental health.

With the help of a picture, she explained that life is a long road and this long road continues and continues until life at a certain point ends as every road ends. The road has its ups and downs and while we travel along this road we need to be able to cope with the different things whether they are happy or gloomy. One needs to navigate the tough situations in life instead of running away from them, they should gather the courage and face them.

Body image is how an individual sees their own body. And that may not be how others see it, or how it is evaluated from a clinical or physical sense. Body image includes your feelings about your body, your culturally-influenced perception of how you think your body looks, and your perception of your body size. Feeling comfortable in your own skin can make you feel more confident, which affects important aspects of your life, such as your work and relationships.

She further discussed a few pointers to remind ourselves that our bodies are gifts-

  • Positive affirmations
  • Think healthier, not skinnier
  • Compliment others freely
  • Surround yourself with positivity
  • Focus on the things you like about yourself
  • Stop comparing ourselves to others
  • Cut out negative self-talk

Next up, she briefly talked about the ways to improve mental health which included connecting with other people, be physically active, learn new skills, practice mindfulness, and be generous and kind.

The floor was open for questions after the discussions. The queries were handled in such a manner that gave more insights on such sensitive topics. In the end, Ramya proposed a vote of thanks and expressed his thoughts and learnings from this webinar. Dr. Kanishka Gupta, Faculty In-charge of Mentoring cell of SCMS, NOIDA concluded the session by expressing gratitude sincerely.

On 3rd February 2022, the Mentoring Cell of SCMS NOIDA conducted a webinar on, “Expand Your Network” as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power-up: Boost for the Race of Life to educate the students about the benefits of building a quality network, to furnish them with the required skills like communication, active listening and social skills. There was active student participation in the event. The session was set to motion by an 8 times TEDx speaker, Mr. Manish Advani, an award winning story-teller and a business leader who has 20 years of experience in various fields of marketing and branding.

The session began with a phrase: “Keep Exploring”. Mr. Manish believes that in the world of networking, one has to keep exploring and learning from all the people they meet in the corporate environment. He kickstarted the webinar with the first and foremost ping in networking which works wonders and should be put into practice to whoever one meets- Always greet the person with a big smile on the face. The power of a smile plays an important role in a person’s health and wellness. He said, “A smile is a very powerful tool which can make a big difference in your life as well as in the lives of people around you”.

Wishing others well may boost your own well-being. Many times in the world of business, peers don’t get along, neglect and reject one another but if one wishes good luck with the assignment or the future to the companion, this type of attitude brings in positivity and hence the foundation of a new relationship. After smiling and wishing good luck, getting into a simple conversation is the next step as conversation creates connection. The next step in building the network is investing time in learning about the individual with whom one wants to build a network. Who all can be a part of our network so that they can help us in maximizing our net worth? Apart from the teachers, the students and the colleagues, any interaction with an individual we get to learn something or the other whether they are from a different place or live nearby, any experience is a teaching tool that aids in the attainment of health and wealth.

The guest speaker has always admired Japan, even though he hasn’t ever been to Japan. But when it comes to talking to a Japanese person, he can easily develop a rapport as he knows the key elements a Japanese person could relate to. So when one invests time in learning, practicing and applying different things (in a social context), they will be able to build relationships with people. The last pointer was people centricity or problem centricity. Problem centricity refers to the fact that every person or individual, regardless of their level of operation, has a problem. We all are surrounded by problems in the corporate world. And we always want someone to help us with problems. But people are centric in practice, and that's something which will help you in problem solving. Because when new people build relations with people then you will be able to work on the solution. He emphasised that your network can expand if you continuously network with different kinds of people and the power of your reflection. If you take 15 to 20 minutes every day in the evening to reflect on how the day went, what the highs and lows were, and how you can turn around the lows in the future so that you don't go through a similar situation again in your life and don't change around you, you will be able to avoid similar situations in the future.

The floor was open for questions after the discussion. The students were inquisitive, enthusiastic and showed the desired interest and passion in expanding their new found corporate horizons. The queries were handled in such a manner that gave more insights into the corporate world which is a testament to the fact that our guest speaker is an expert in integrating leadership and employee development with internal communications and personal/employer branding. It was a thrilling session as the students were enriched with the apt knowledge and skills to build a reputed professional image in the corporate world. In the end, Arunima Gulati proposed a vote of thanks and expressed her thoughts and learnings from this webinar. Dr. Kanishka Gupta, Faculty In-charge of Mentoring cell of SCMS NOIDA concluded the session by expressing gratitude sincerely.

On January 28, 2022, Mentoring Cell of SCMS NOIDA organized a webinar on time management and effective planning titled “Assassination of Procrastination” as a part of the Value Added Course- Power-up- Boost for the Race of Life. The aim of this webinar was to highlight the importance of time management in a student’s life. Mr. Vibhas Sen, a strategic marketing consultant and Paralympian, was the guest speaker of this event. The event was smoothly conducted under the guidance of Dr. Kanishka Gupta and active participation of the students.

Mr. Vibhas Sen shared insights on how procrastination can affect our professional life. He highlighted that by procrastinating we are burdening ourselves even more. For a student, it is natural to procrastinate but it must not become a habit. College students often procrastinate and keep on delaying their deadlines for assignments and projects but this impacts their grades. To overcome this, Mr. Vibhas Sen accentuated that every person must find a motive in their life. When one finds a goal to achieve, they are not distracted and hence do not procrastinate. He expressed how he himself balanced his work life and passion by effectively managing time. He suggested that students should prioritize their activities so that they give time to studies and leisure accordingly.

Then the session was open for students to ask their questions. Many students asked questions like why do people procrastinate? Is timetable the only solution to tackle procrastination or there are any other methods to do so? What are the basic practices and habits a procrastinator can adopt in their lifestyle to overcome this attitude? Can procrastination be good? Mr. Vibhas Sen answered all the questions by elaborating that timetable is not an effective way to plan your schedule as many people are not able to stick to their timetable. He said that unless your inner self is not motivated and your goal is not clear, you cannot overcome the habit of procrastination. He further adds that procrastination can never be helpful as by procrastinating we often let go of opportunities only to regret them later. Thus, effective time management is a must-have skill for a student and a proper professional as well as personal life. The session was concluded by Dr. Kanishka Gupta, faculty In-charge of the Mentoring Cell, by giving the vote of thanks to the speaker and expressed how helpful and insightful was the session for students.

On 18th February 2022, the Mentoring Cell of Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies NOIDA, conducted a webinar “Speak it Up” as a component of the Value-added Course- ‘Power-up: Boost for the Race of Life’ with the purpose of educating the students about the significance of communication skills in achieving professional success and amplifying the transformative impact it can have on professional relationships and how having coherent communication skills helps an individual in climbing up the corporate ladder and building a unique personality. The event was kickstarted by the guest speaker, Ankit Ravindra Jain, an entrepreneurship mentor at the Confederation of Global Innovators (CGI), founder of ‘Communications Champion Hub’ and a Communication & Public Speaking Coach.

“Communication is the fire that fuels the workplace engine.” Mr. Jain commenced the session by emphasising on the importance of impregnable and effective communication skills in order to attain progression professionally and in the workplace. The speaker elucidated Albert Mehrabian’s renowned ‘7-38-55’ rule which is a theory concerning communication that quantifies Body language, Verbal and Non-verbal cues whilst communicating. Agreeing with this theory, he assented that while communicating, non-verbal cues such as one’s body language and tone of voice articulates far more about their feelings than the verbal cues. Correcting and amending your body language is crucial to prevent misinterpretation during formal negotiations and for improving your communication skills by and large. In addition to this, the tone of our voice accounts for a substantial proportion of meaning and mastering the accommodation of assertive, declarative and counterproductive tones can help us in becoming effective communicators.

Comprehending these aspects of communication can help us cognise the intent and underlying emotions of our speech and may greatly improve our ability to achieve the upper hand. Mr. Jain strongly relies on the belief that “not everyone is born with effective communication skills but it can certainly be mastered with time and practice.” Effective communication is particularly imperative for management students for the reason that it not only inculcates managerial and leadership skills but also translates persuasion into our speech and surges the probability of achieving impact. Moving forward with his presentation, the speaker also cited research by ‘Carnegie Institute of Technology’ which states that roughly 85% of our financial success is attributable to our personality and the manner in which we communicate and only 15% is a result of technical acquaintances.

Nonetheless, communication skills are not all you need. A crucial component of the same, confidence, is equally essential when collaborating in a business negotiation. Communication is ultimately about influencing the standpoint and behaviour of our audience while also leaving an everlasting impression, and that cannot be achieved without subduing confidence. Following this enlightening and instructive presentation, the attendees shared their thoughts and opinions on the topic and asked germane questions. Finally, the Mentoring Cell and Faculty in-charge, Dr. Kanishka Gupta proposed a vote of thanks and concluded the session.

On 3rd February 2022, the Mentoring cell of SCMS NOIDA conducted a webinar on leadership named “Apex of Influence” as a part of the Value Added Course- Power up: Boost for the Race of Life. The purpose of this webinar was to help students to understand how they can become worthy leaders and influence the people around them. The students actively participated in the event by discussing stories, advertisements and the lessons learned from them. They got acquainted with the thought that sharing their life stories with others is the key to influence and inspire people. The session was carried on by the TEDx speaker, Mr. Manish Advani, who is an award-winning storyteller and is an expert in integrating leadership and employee development with internal communications and personal/employer branding.

The session began with a quote by John Maxwell: “Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is about one life, influencing another.” Mr. Manish Advani stated another quote-

Pay now, Play later or Play now, Pay later” and welcomed the thoughts and opinions of the students on this quote. He stated that leadership is all about investing in the team and connecting their passions with their profession. The leaders should know their colleagues well and invest time in them. He also believes that leadership is all about sharing concerns and feelings with others. The more the business leaders will share with others, the more their market share will expand. He advised students to share their stories and life experiences with others because people get inspired by stories. He narrated his own life experience of visiting a tourist attraction in the Kingdom of Bahrain called “The Tree of Life”. It was a 400-year-old normal tree amidst of a desert. He realized that to appreciate the tree, he needs to go back to the history, when there was no development in civilization but the tree offered shade to people in the midst of a desert. The conclusion was that people admire others when they are aware of their stories and life experiences. He taught students that stories are powerful ways that can uplift and enrich people and help in influencing others.

Mr. Manish Advani further shared with students how his mother influenced him and taught him to share with others often. His mother used to say- “When you share with others, you become happier in life and the happiness multiplies and comes back to you later in life.” He also advised students to share all the knowledge they will gain in their college life so that the knowledge will be retained by them for a longer duration of time. He taught them to learn and not to forget the “art and the storytelling” as they are the two useful tools to leverage their own experience and horizons and of others as well. These tools will assist the students in problem solving because they will be capable of visualizing the problem and solving it effectively. They can also be used to create brands, negotiate with people, help in decision-making, work with speed and to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. He also taught students the hidden meaning of the word “SHARE”.

  • S- Straight forward

Be direct while setting expectations. Empathize with people and be mindful while dealing with others.

  • H- Happiness

On 4th February 2022, the Mentoring cell of SCMS NOIDA conducted a webinar on change management named “Facing the Unexpected” as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power up: Boost for the Race of Life. The purpose of this webinar was to help the students in understanding and making them aware of the impact changing situations could have on them. They engaged in the event actively and gained useful insights by discussing and asking questions. They learned that instead of being frustrated by the unexpected moments and circumstances, how they can adapt themselves to it. The session was carried forward by the TEDx speaker, Mr. Ajay Kelkar, who is the founder of the data analytics company, Hansa Cequity with corporate experience of more than 30 years.

The session began with two fun and intriguing activities. In the first activity, the students were asked to fold their arms in front of them and then to reverse their position. They were asked for their input and it was found that some of them felt uncomfortable whereas some felt more confident as they were not used to the change and they became more aware of their postures as well. The second activity was to hold the phones as people do while talking on call and then to switch to the other ear. Some students felt comfortable doing so while others felt dutiful and more attentive. As the session continued, the students participated in another game named “4 square game” where they were asked to divide certain areas of a square in different parts. The purpose of the game was to make students realise that whenever they are faced with a new problem, it is naturally assumed that these problems will have complex answers to it. But that is not always the case. The problems had simple and easy solutions which are generally overlooked. The students were also introduced to an iceberg model which stated that behaviour is one thing which can be seen and addressed. But thinking, feeling, values and beliefs are something which are intangible and often go unaddressed. The actions and the behaviours should be aligned with the values and beliefs which the students uphold.

Mr. Ajay Kelkar narrated 3 “adventure films” of his life to all the students. The first adventure film was about how he unknowingly committed to cover a distance of 1800 km, from Mumbai to Kanyakumari on a bicycle. The lesson learned from this film was that most people will try to stop others from taking up a challenge and on this adventurous journey of life students will meet kind people too who will support them. People always limit themselves due to fear and they let fear take control of everything. The second adventure film taught the students to go against the wind despite the opposition of others. The third adventure film was about how Mr. Ajay Kelkar founded a data analytics company, Hansa Cequity. The lesson to be learned from this story was “Be your own master”. The students were also introduced to 4 principles which could help them in dealing with the unexpected.

  • Principle 1- EQ and IQ

With a rational mind, emotions are necessary too as they help in supporting teammates and colleagues.

  • Principle 2- RQ and EQ

Resilience trumps all else.

  • Principle 3- Ambitions > Resources

Ambition should lead the way.

  • Principle 4- True North > than everything else

True North refers to beliefs, passions and values the students uphold.

The floor of the event was open for questions after the discussions. The students were quite enthusiastic and eager to know about how they can stop limiting themselves. The queries of the students were addressed and were given more insight into the marketing domain as well. In the end, Nipun Dhingra proposed a vote of thanks and gratitude on behalf of the students and the Symbiosis family. Dr. Kanishka Gupta, Faculty In-charge of Mentoring cell of SCMS NOIDA concluded the session by expressing gratitude sincerely.

Movies covered were from Bollywood and Hollywood. The amount of participation and interaction in this game was so high that the answers were flooding in even before the moderator could finish the question! Afterward, the event’s main game i.e., CrickWiser was played. Students were divided into 5 breakout rooms with 16 students and 3 moderators. Out of those 16 students, 8 teams of 2 students were made. 2 teams among those 8 teams were pitted against each other to answer questions in a rapid-fire manner on various topics. The team with the most points in the breakout room advances to the second and final round. In the final round, the winners of the respective breakout rooms were asked questions in the same manner as round 1 but with an increased difficulty level. Finally, we had not one, or two but four winners who managed to break all tiebreakers.

Convivial highlighted the importance of skills like communication, team building, critical thinking and related skills which are an integral part of the Power up: Boost for the Race of Life value added course. It was observed that a certain level of tongue-tied introversion was observed in some students, but the amount of time they took to overcome that by stepping out of their comfort zone showed us that they are willing to become the best version of themselves by the end of this course.  In the end, Dr. Kanishka Gupta, Faculty in charge concluded the game event by giving a vote of thanks. Every moderator expressed their gratitude and excitement about how it was an honor moderating the most anticipated game event of the year.

On 28th January 2022, the Mentoring Cell of SCMS NOIDA facilitated, “LinkedIn Workshop” titled “Get Linked with LinkedIn” as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power-up: Boost for the Race of Life to help the students learn about building a strong and well-maintained LinkedIn profile. There was the active participation of the students in the event in which they discussed quite a few topics on LinkedIn. The session was set to motion by the TEDx speaker, Shraddha Srivastava, professionally known as the LinkedIn Coach, a full-time CEO, and Founder of Digital Height.

The session began with a major question: What is LinkedIn? Is it just a social media app, a platform for a job seeker, a platform for a businessman/entrepreneur, a professional community, a lead generation tool especially for B2B, or a platform of millionaires? Ms. Shraddha said that LinkedIn is a combination of all these points which has a lot of benefits whether you are a student or a professional. A big question about how valuable LinkedIn is for you was addressed. “Sharing and grabbing the knowledge of your industry is the key,” said Shraddha Srivastava.

After discussing the benefits of LinkedIn, Shraddha Srivastava enlightened the students about its importance, an element of an all-star profile wherein the hacks, tips, tricks, and techniques were shared to build a strong profile. She also emphasized that being unique is particularly important, uniqueness in your profile and in the content that you are posting can work wonders and differentiate you from the group, cherishing your uniqueness is potent. According to Shraddha Srivastava, building connections with HR recruiters is important because it makes you more versatile. When you encounter tricky situations, you have a network of individuals who can help identify solutions or otherwise support you. As a result, this network may increase your job security and your upward mobility potential. She addressed the Dos and Don’ts for a professional profile on LinkedIn which should never be ignored.

An optimized LinkedIn profile is one where every part of your profile is filled out and shows audiences what you do, who you are, and what you are an expert in. So, profile optimization helps to grow! It can be done by following some simple steps which are given below-

  • Find the keywords
  • Add it in the headline
  • Add the keyword in the about/summary
  • Add related industrial job
  • Designation in experience

Here are the five ways to boost the post reach which were discussed-

  • Share longer text post
  • Add some hooks in the first three lines
  • Always add links in comments
  • Add spaces and use a few emojis
  • Make sure that the content is error-free

She gave insights that your digital references are your LinkedIn recommendations. Hovering over any profile is a favorite pastime of recruiters. It provides insight into what your classmates, co-workers, ex-boss, or graduation thesis advisor thought of you, as well as your task delivery and efficiency. A well-written recommendation can help you land the job of your dreams. Because these recommendations are public, they have a significant impact on everyone. The greatest way to acquire someone's endorsement is to write recommendations for them. All good things come back to you, and the same is true here. The floor was open for questions after the workshop. The students were inquistive, enthusiastic and showed the desired interest in learning. On February 4, 2022, Mentoring Cell of SCMS NOIDA organized a webinar on team building “Synchronize and Synergize”. This session was conducted as a part of Value Added Course- Power-up, Boost for the Race of Life. The aim of this webinar was to highlight the significance of team building in the corporate world and help management students realize that teamwork makes the dream work. To give insights on team building and assist students in developing team building skills effectively, Ms. Gargi Bakshi was the honorable speaker of this session. She is a coveted Edu speaker and passionate edupreneur. She works towards laying a strong, value-rich foundation for young children, and aims to develop a love for learning in every child. She has impacted 10,000+ young minds positively and feels fortunate to have worked with the best minds and educationists in the industry. The event was smoothly conducted under the guidance of Dr. Kanishka Gupta, faculty-in charge and active participation of students.

The session began with an interaction among Ms. Gargi Bakshi and the students as she asked the significance of team building skills. The students brought forward their views on the topic. She shared how she started her journey as a team leader at the start of her career when she worked at HSBC Bank. She expressed her challenges as a team leader as she had to coordinate with everyone’s opinions that are generally diverse. She then explained four major skills which play an important role in transforming us into a great leader. She elucidated that the first key skill in team building is self-awareness. It involves knowing yourself, your motivations and blind spots and how they will affect everyone in the team. She added that we can increase our self-awareness by two ways namely- introspection and feedback. The second skill is empathy. Once we understand ourselves we understand others better. The third skill which she talked about is communication. Effective communication is essential for team building and a must have skill for a leader. The last skill she talked about is respect for self and respect for others. To elaborate this, she instructed the students to draw using a pen and a paper. Then she asked students to show what they have drawn and every student had something different on their sheets. Through this activity she concluded that everyone is different and everyone has different opinions and views. Same happens in a team as well as in the corporate world. This can lead to clashes which can move from professional to personal leading to ego clashes among the team members. Thus, it is important to respect and consider every person’s opinion in the team.

The session then was followed by a fun game where the students were sent into breakout rooms to play a game. There were some challenges given to the students and some famous Bollywood characters. They were asked to assign the challenge to a Bollywood character and give the reason for the same. Through this activity the students learnt the importance of a team in any field. The session was concluded by the vote of thanks given to Ms. Gargi Bakshi. Dr. Kanishka Gupta, faculty-in charge, Mentoring Cell, expressed her gratitude and conveyed how helpful the session was for the students.

The Mentoring Cell of Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies NOIDA, conducted a webinar, “Make it Happen - Manifestation” on 12th February 2022, as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power-up: Boost for the Race of Life with the intention of promulgating the importance of manifestation and that whether we believe it or not, we will ultimately receive what we manifest now. This informative session was set to motion by the guest speaker, Saveera Bahl, a Career and Behavioural Counsellor and Founding Director at Manasvi Wellbeing Pvt. Ltd.

The speaker commenced the session by stating that what we see in our reality now are the seeds of thoughts and emotions that we planted at a certain point in our lives and also accentuated the significance of implementing manifestation in our everyday lives. She elucidated that manifestation implies ones alignment with ones emotions, thoughts, feelings and desires through focus and supportive action. If we pay close attention, we can observe the correlation between our thoughts and what we have in reality. She proceeded to explain the “Law of Manifestation” and how it asserts that we magnetise events and situations of similar frequency as our mind-set. Be it deliberately or without our knowledge, we constantly reflect a vibrational energy that determines the experiences we attract or repel.

In addition to this, Ms. Saveera Bahl meditated with the attendees and introduced to them the technique “Letter from your future self” for practicing manifestation. She believes that this exercise is a target-setting tool. When we write our goals out physically or put our minds to it, we are imprinting them in our subconscious mind. This technique is preeminent for the reason that imprinting our intentions on our subconscious mind will lead us to naturally make the right decisions which will then pilot us towards our final goal. The law of manifestation works along the ideology: what you focus on becomes your reality and this precept places emphasis on the power that our thoughts can have on the outcomes in our lives. Ultimately, everything we experience is attracted to us because our manifestation is responding to the thoughts we offered at some point.

However, just engaging in our thoughts is not enough to manifest our dreams. Notwithstanding the hard work it involves, optimism and elimination of negative thoughts is an inevitable part of manifestation. To prevent limiting thoughts from hampering the manifestation process, future-oriented supportive affirmations can reinforce confidence and help in breaking limiting subconscious patterns. Following this instructive discussion, the floor was open for questions. The students were ardent to put forward their queries and procure more knowledge about how they can manifest their desires and transform their beliefs into reality. It was an informative and illuminating session as the students were delighted to learn about manifestation. The Mentoring Cell of SCMS NOIDA and Faculty in-charge, Dr. Kanishka Gupta then concluded the session with a vote of thanks and expressed their sincere gratitude.

On 22nd February 2022, the Mentoring Cell of Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies, NOIDA conducted a webinar on emotional intelligence titled, “Perceiving Feelings” as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power up: Boost for the Race of Life. The sole objective of the webinar was to make students capable of handling their emotions and to understand the effect of parental relationships on them. The students conversed with the guest speaker and participated in the event with great enthusiasm and zeal. The session was quite interactive, fun and the discussions were candid. The guest speaker of this session was an emotional coach, Ms. Shivangi Maniar, who is the co-founder of the company OTLO, which helps in re-creating lines of communication between parents and their children.

The session began by defining emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is the ability to use, perceive, understand, handle and manage your emotions and the emotions of others. It is all about responding instead of reacting. The guest speaker, Shivangi Maniar started by introducing herself to the students present in the meeting by sharing her life story. She showed them a cartoon of a caterpillar and described herself as someone who enjoys her profession. Then the students were asked to find an object which describes them and express who they are. After discussing the inputs of the students, she asked them to draw a circle on a piece of paper with a dot in the center representing the students themselves and to write mom, dad, and the name of their siblings outside the circle. She described that this circle is the soul group of students consisting of their parents and siblings. Then they were asked to rate their relationship with their parents on a scale of 0 to 10. She stated that this soul group is their psychological energy center; their psychological core. If the core is strong, life will be a breeze. But if it is not so, then extra efforts should be put up to maintain this psychological core.

She stated that the father represents the “Sun of their Life.” Sun represents structure, authority, confidence and dynamism. Depending on the quality of their relationship with their father, the way a child approaches people and moves into the world will be affected accordingly. If the relationship with their father is not healthy then the students might face the issue of having no self-esteem and they may carry a fear of rejection along with them. Similarly, the mother represents optimism, enthusiasm, creativity and emotional support. Depending on the quality of the relationship with their mother the child may be a giver. If the relationship is not healthy, then the child may be short-tempered. Shivangi Maniar advised the students to maintain a flourishing relationship with their parents while imposing healthy boundaries. She guided the students to attain this goal by observing how their parents love them and to return their love in the same manner as they do but at the same time, get disconnected from their reactions.

The floor of the event was open for questions after the discussions. The students were curious to learn to maintain balance in life. She taught students that validation is very important in relationships and they have to be expressive of their needs. She also taught that they do not have to dissolve and lose themselves to love someone. The queries of the students were addressed and handled with benevolence. In the end, Surya Vajpeyi expressed the vote of thanks on behalf of the students and the Symbiosis family. Dr. Kanishka Gupta, Faculty In-charge of Mentoring cell of SCMS NOIDA concluded the session by expressing her sincere gratitude.

The Mentoring Cell of SCMS NOIDA, conducted a webinar, “Mastering of Moods” on 16th March 2022, as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power-up: Boost for the Race of Life. The guest speaker, Ms. Saakshi Singla, a child Development & Parenting Expert and gender equality advocate, gave the students insights on what addiction is, the substances that can lead to addictive behavior and how Self-control can be used as a tool to overcome this form of dependency.

The speaker started the session with a simple question directed to all the students- What comes to mind when you think about addictions, the most common responses being drugs and alcohol. She proceeded to explain that the term addiction not only relates to the dependence on a specific substance, but can simply also be addictive behavior associated with activities like eating, working, etc. or as is most common in the youth these days, internet and social media. An individual is likely to be addicted to an object or activity if they unremittingly engage in behaviors that cause harm and are compulsive in nature which may include the inability to stop participating in a certain activity.

To put it quite simply, anything that alters an individual’s mood can become addictive. This may include a plethora of substances and behaviors such as video games, internet, cleaning, eating, shopping, gambling, texting, etc. The reason why addictions are typically looked down upon besides their possibly harmful mental and physical effects is that it can strain relationships and hinder the working of every-day activities and can also take over self-control. The speaker believes that most addictions begin with a sense of satisfaction or comfort or the feeling that they can get away from reality for a few moments. It begins as a form of self-medication because it seems to cure problems which could be as simple as boredom.

Therefore, addiction is simply the dependency of an individual on an object or activity. This is because our body adapts to the feeling provided by a substance and requires more of it, which in turn leads to negative changes in behavior. Therefore, to avoid any kind of addictions, it is important we take a few minutes each day to meditate and reflect, away from the substances or activities that can cause addictive behavior. This interactive yet informative session was concluded with a vote of thanks by the members of the Mentoring Cell and Faculty in-charge Dr. Kanishka Gupta with the message that the best way to dodge or drive away from addictions is to replace it with productivity.

On March 15, 2022, Mentoring Cell of SCMS NOIDA organized a webinar on stress management “Suppress Your Stress”. This session was conducted as a part of Value added Course, Power-up: Boost for the race of life. The objective of this webinar was to highlight the ways to manage stress in our professional as well as personal life. To give insights on stress management and how to deal with various phases of life, Ms. Saveera Bahl was the honorable speaker of this session. She is a passionate career and behavioral counselor dealing with children and adolescents certified by NCERT. She is the founding director at Manasvi Wellbeing Private Limited and master practitioner in NLP from Alphastars. The event was smoothly conducted under the guidance of Dr. Kanishka Gupta, faculty-in charge and active participation of students.

The session began with an interaction among Ms. Saveera Bahl and the students as she asked what according to them is meant by stress. The students presented their views that when someone is not in a comfortable situation or when any particular thing disturbs a person, the person might get stressed. They gave examples of different situations when an individual might be stressed. Some examples were that pandemic times have led to stress and depression for many people, college students also get stressed at various points of life relating to career and personal life. Ma’am then elaborated that stress is a feeling or an emotion which arises due to helplessness of a person, when things are not in control. She said that instead of managing stress one should look towards the absence of stress. We tend to control everything in our lives and when the things do not happen as we want, we often get disappointed and dejected. It is us who try to control everything and in an attempt to control everything we end up controlling nothing. Thus, it will be us who can remove this negative emotion from our lives.  She said that thought is a great slave but a bad master. Our thoughts are a major determinant that govern our lifestyle. Our thoughts are so powerful that it can have a toll on our life. One must not hang on to things and learn to let them go. She emphasized that meditation is an effective way to keep our mind calm, control our thoughts and realize negativity from ourselves. She then asked students to close their eyes and start breathing. The session was followed by a small meditation round where ma’am was saying “I am not the body” at the time of inhaling and “I am not even the mind” while exhaling.

The session was then open for students to ask their questions and students asked various questions. A student asked that sometimes the ways or hobbies we use to release stress gives us stress. So what should one do in that case? Ma'am answered that the best way to release stress is meditation. While meditating we spent time with ourselves and released all the negativity. Another student asked why many people over-think. So is there any solution to overcome this? Ma’am said that the moment you start thinking about a negative topic which is such a waste of time, stop then and there. Don’t let any negative thoughts even grow in the mind. Then Saveera Ma’am also highlighted how many people tend to believe everything on social media and how social media life is an essential part of the youth today. To explain this she asked students approximately how many friends they have on social media and how many of them will be available for you when you are in trouble. Everyone realized that there is a huge numerical difference between the two. Through this she concluded that we must not give all our information out on social media, we must not make everyone our friend on social media and not make time on it. The session was concluded by vote of thanks given to Ms. Saveera Bahl. Dr. Kanishka Gupta, faculty-in charge, Mentoring Cell, expressed her gratitude and conveyed how helpful the session was for the students.

On 19th February 2022, the Mentoring Cell of Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies NOIDA conducted a webinar on “Conquer your Anger” as a part of the Value Added Course: “Power-up: Boost for the Race of Life” to enlighten the students on how anger can ruin relationships with families, friends, partners, and colleagues. The guest speaker, Ms. Anjuman Bains is a counselling psychologist, researcher, and lecturer dedicated to working in the direction of mental health awareness.

The speaker kick started the session with an instance which involved a typical act of road rage. However, one of the persons involved in the aftermath of the accident managed the situation with patience and maturity which made the fighting parties look like fools. She proceeded to explain how people often mistake youthful ambition and demeanor for anger, how people often use the personality of a person as an excuse or a reason for their anger outbursts. A person who is in anger is a person who remains unaided and the people who take that person lightly either become victims of his outbursts or end up stigmatizing the person who is angry and needs help.

The speaker then advanced towards the causes of anger which include:

  1. Stress: Stress pops up from career choices, relationships with loved ones, and of course the recent pandemic lockdowns where almost every individual was subjected to a monotonous life.
  2. Frustration: Frustration stems from the simplest of reasons. For most people frustration evolves into anger as people can’t identify the trigger points, the important reasons which create confusion.
  3. Fear in themselves: People who have fear in themselves are extremely conscious. Their bodies are constantly releasing adrenaline when they find themselves out of their comfort zones. For example, introverts at a party, whenever someone tries to talk to them they aren't able to react and end up either being submissive or aggressive with people around them.
  4. Annoyance/disappointment: This happens when we expect someone (mostly in relationships) to behave in a certain way but they don’t behave in the same way we expected. We feel disappointed and start interacting with that person in anger. Disappointment is often based on expectations and not promises broken.

To deal with anger or to conquer your anger it is equally important to identify the causes of anger and learn to control or handle your anger. Anger can be a useful tool for personal development too. If anger is managed well it can be used as motivation to complete tasks, achieve goals and become a more productive and an individual with a high Emotional Quotient (EQ).

The speaker then proceeded to explain the types of individuals with different anger traits, these are as follows:

  1. The Loud type: people who exhibit this trait are often loud in discussions, debates, etc. They believe by resorting to shouting or raising their voice they establish supremacy over their opponent/colleague. To handle these people, we should not get intimidated by them. Keep our stance clear and not let the loud type dominate us.
  2. The I know it all: These people get very personal when provoked. To handle these people, keep listening to them. Make mental notes because the things they say can actually be useful for us.
  3. The Victim: This set of people end up victimizing themselves after an argument. Their main objective is to seek sympathy from the person they are arguing with. After an argument try to listen to them it will be worthless to justify their actions as in their mindset they will never make peace with the truth.

Soon the floor was open to questions after discussion. The queries were handled in such a way that gave more insights into such an important topic. It was a thrilling session as the students were enriched with the apt knowledge and skills to become a person with high EQ. In the end Sanskriti proposed a vote of thanks and expresses her thoughts and learnings from this thrilling session from this webinar. Dr. Kanishka Gupta, Faculty In-charge of Mentoring cell of SCMS NOIDA concluded the session by expressing gratitude sincerely.

On 17th March 2022, the Mentoring Cell of Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies NOIDA conducted a webinar on, “Insomnia in Teenagers” as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power-up: Boost for the Race of Life to educate the students to transform themselves into their best version through her life coaching process. The session explained how sleep problems can be problematic for learning and wellbeing of adolescents and how to overcome insomnia.  The session was set to motion by a TEDx speaker, Ms. Anamika Yaduvanshi who has always followed the mantra of living each moment to the fullest with the zest of life. She has extensive experience and success in delivering results in Personality and Leadership Development, Counseling on Teenager Problems and Depression & Personal Problem Counseling. She is the Founder President of Astitva Mujhse Meri Pehchan.

Sleep Not Found, the session began with a question: Is it actually a problem? Ms. Anamika believes that in the world quality sleep plays an important role in overall well-being. Not getting the sleep you need on a regular basis can have a huge impact on mental and physical health and quality of life. It just doesn't happen, we are purposely choosing insomnia. She further mentioned that insomnia can be of multiple types-

  • Chronic Insomnia, lasts a month or longer
  • Acute Insomnia, lasts a day or days, or weeks
  • Comorbid Insomnia, associated with another disorder
  • Onset Insomnia, difficulty falling asleep
  • Maintenance Insomnia, inability to stay asleep

Insomnia can sap not only your energy level and mood but also your health, work performance and quality of life. Next up, a very sensitive question was discussed, “What happens if you have insomnia?” There are serious health risks associated with insomnia. Insomnia can increase your risk for mental health problems as well as overall health concerns. Stress, an irregular sleep schedule, poor sleeping habits, mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, physical illnesses and pain, medications, neurological problems, and specific sleep disorders, eating late in the evening, lack of exercise and intake of caffeine. This was the answer to the question, “What causes insomnia?” For many people, a combination of these factors can initiate and exacerbate insomnia.

Ms. Yaduvanshi holds an opinion that simple lifestyle changes can make a world of difference to your quality of sleep. She asked all the participants to keep a track. It won’t happen naturally, push yourselves! Further, she discussed six exclusive tools in order to prevent the serious problems that are an outcome of insomnia- No screen for 1 hour before and after bed, replace phone with books, eat early, gratitude and affirmations, to do list and practicing meditation. On 26th February 2022, the Mentoring Cell of Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies NOIDA conducted a webinar on, “Self Confidence and Motivation” as a part of the Value-Added Course- Power-up: Boost for the Race of Life to educate the students that confidence is a major motivator and can be a big factor in success. The prime objective of this session is to highlight the importance of confidence in one’s life and suggest ways that can boost one’s confidence. Removal of inferiority complex, addressal of insecurities, the breakdown of the vicious cycle and finding the right source of motivation. The session was set to motion by a TEDx speaker, Ms. Anujaa Navaratnaa is a Gender Affirmative Counseling Psychologist, Spiritual Mentor, and Transformation Coach/Life Coach – with a background of more than 21 years of work experience in Corporate.

Saiyam Arora kick started the event with a quote, “No one is you and that is your super power”. Ms. Anuja added a quote which she thinks will be useful for the rest of our lives and that is one must grow through what you go through. She took the example of ‘selfie’. She believes that today’s generation is born with this knowledge that they can take their own picture. She used this example as we were discussing self-ablaze, self-ignition, we have to be self-starters, we have to be self-motivated and it comes from when one is highly self-confident. She further exclaimed that taking a selfie is in a way saying that how I look depends upon me, how I prepare myself and what do I do to prepare myself.

Then, she discussed the concept of Power of Subconscious Mind. We as human beings use only 10% of our mind and this 10% is conscious mind whereas the 90% is subconscious or unconscious mind which we don’t know anything about, we don’t know how deep rooted our mind has kept emotions and memories. She asked that if you can tap your subconscious mind, how much more powerful you will be? To which she asked the students to perform an activity wherein she commanded us to imagine a situation so as to make the participants understand the importance of subconscious mind. Subconscious mind is just like a young child, the way in which you give any information to your child at young age and teach him to repeat, unknowingly the child will repeat it and will start believing it, same way whatever information we feed in our brain will get registered in the subconscious mind. Then the subconscious mind starts believing in any impressions created in the mind.

Subconscious mind is the powerhouse of all living beings, your subconscious mind controls all the vital processes of your body and knows the answer to all problem. Also, the law of actual action and the reaction is universal. Therefore, one should be aware of all thoughts that you entertain in your conscious mind. In order to achieve more and more one has to believe in themselves that they are capable of achieving more and has to make a firm belief in oneself. This will happen by keeping your conscious mind busy with the expectation of the best, and your subconscious will faithfully reproduce your habitual thinking. She believes that it is very important to keep the mind and the emotions positive because positive emotions build our resilience. Our guest speaker ended the session with an advice to do two things: Firstly, 16% PF Test which is a personality test and the other one is the Strengths Finder, a book which helps to understand the top strengths and how to use those strengths in an efficient way.
